Get a Mouth Guard to Stop Teeth Grinding at Night

If you suffer from bruxism, then you grind your teeth at night while you sleep. This grinding can wreak havoc on your teeth. Fortunately, something can be done to protect your teeth from this horrible habit. You can be fitted for a mouth guard to wear while you sleep. In essence, a mouth guard is like a bite pad, that protects the teeth from grinding directly against each other.

Grinding your teeth while you sleep is a condition that is not only disturbing to those around you, but is also physically damaging to you. When you grind your teeth at night, pretty much anyone who is within earshot of you will not be able to get a good night’s rest. What is even worse is that this condition can cause damage to your teeth by wearing them down, as well as cause damage to the temporal mandibular joints (TMJ). Therefore, it is very important that you protect your teeth and jaw from the ill effects that come with bruxism.

Mouth guards are usually made out of plastic and are usually assembled in a lab or at a dentist’s office. Being fitted for a mouth guard involves having impressions taken of your teeth. From that mold the mouth guard is manufactured out of plastic in a lab. A mouth guard can also be made directly in your mouth in the dentists’ office. Basically this is done through the use of pre-fabricated mouth guards which the dentist then fits for you in his office.

The pre-fabricated mouth guards are typically less expensive than those made in the lab. Whichever type you choose, it is important that the mouth guard fit your mouth perfectly. Otherwise, it will not solve your problem.

Although teeth grinding may seem like more of a nuisance than anything else, it is a serious condition which can and should be controlled with a mouth guard. If you do not control your bruxism, you can end up with a chipped or broken tooth, headaches and jaw pain. When teeth grinding gets extreme, you may even need surgical intervention.

If you are grinding your teeth at night, go see your dentist right away so you can begin to resolve your problem before any damage can occur.
